Back in Action!

So I have been out of the whole coupon loop for about two months due to our big move. Good thing I had ample stock in both my pantry and fridge! It has taken some planning and research to familiarize myself with my new area but I think I have everything down and I am ready to get started. On top of my usual shopping I now have to shop for my future neice/nephew that is coming the end of the year. So stay tuned for some serious savings and deals and follow me to see how well I do :-)

Shopping Slip-Up #7: Don't Come Up Short

After receiving a $10-off Safeway coupon in the mail last week, I decided to brave the brick-and-mortar store and use it.  The coupon stated that I needed to spend $50 or more.  Piece o' cake.  So I drew up an order at home, targeting all the best deals, and using my online coupons.  I brought the order up to $60, in case they were out of anything, I'd still clear the required $50.

Went to Safeway today, with only 1/4 of my kids, which was nice. And she even slept through the whole thing, although it took a while to find a cart that didn't have shuttering wheels or some sort of funky wobble to it. Baby doesn't like a bumpy ride.  I had to walk around and gather my own groceries, which I'm not used to, but whatever.  They were only out of one thing on my list, but my order still cleared $50, so on to the checkout I went.

The order came to $108.13, but after I swiped my club card, came down to $38.12, even before the checker had swiped my $10-off coupon. WHAT! I had saved too much!? I wasn't sure whether to be happy I'd saved more than I had expected to, or disappointed that I couldn't use my coupon for another 10 bucks off. The checker pointed out that my coupon didn't expire for a while, so I could use it on my next trip. (Thanks, lady.) Still baffled by my unexpected discount, I looked over my receipt in the car and found a $12 credit. Oh, yeah. I had a $12 credit on my account from a previous online order. I forgot. Damn. And since I already counted this credit in the previous order, I can't count it on this one, too, so my savings only came to 54%. ...meh.

Which brings me to another point: credits from online orders.  One way or another, discounts are sometimes not credited upon checkout, so I need to check each one off my receipt after I get my orders. If I'm out a significant amount, I'll call Safeway and let them know, and they'll credit it to my next order. And they round it up to the nearest dollar, which is a nice practice.

Here's today's order, originally $108.13, down to $50.12 (54%):

8 large navel oranges: 28¢ each (67%)
1 Pillsbury Brownie Mix: 99¢ (67%)
4 Red Tomatoes On-the-Vine: 57¢ (63%)
6 Campbell's Chunky soups, assorted varieties: $1.25 each (58%)
2 Heinz Squeeze Ketchups: $1.79 each (51%)
4 Barilla Pasta Sauces, assorted varieties: $1.76 each (50%)
4 Ocean Spray Craisins: $1.75 each (50%)
4 Oroweat Bread Loaves: $2.50 each (50%)
4 Quaker Instant Oatmeal: $2.40 (50%)

Online Adventures, Week 1

Good afternoon, Coupon Comrades!

This week's grocery order came in at $79.30, down from $195.00.  Now, I'm no Sandra, but I'll take a 59% savings any day.

I've done all my non-taxable grocery shopping online at Safeway.com, and have had it delivered, since 2009. Because I'm a queen, that's why.  And because shopping in a store with four little kids is a torture I prefer not to share with the general public. Plus, I have my way with Safeway.com's online promotions, which I can only exploit online.

So here's this week's breakdown, complete with savings percentages:

1 Open Nature Sausage Spinach & Feta - 12 Oz: (96¢) I was paid 96¢ to take these sausages.  Can't beat that with a stick. - 119%
6 Oscar Mayer Franks Turkey Smoked Hardwood - 16 Oz: 96¢ each - Turns out, you can freeze turkey franks for up to 2 months! - 78%
4 Nabisco Ritz Crackers, assorted varieties: $1.39 each - 71%
8 large navel oranges: 33¢ each - 71%
4 Kelloggs Eggo Waffles, assorted varieties: $1.49 each - 66%
4 red tomatoes, on-the-vine: 54¢ each - 66%
8 Pacific Rose apples: 43¢ each - 64%
3 Keebler Fudge Shoppe Cookies, assorted varieties: $1.67 each - 64%
4 Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn, assorted varieties: $1.49 each - 64%
3 Planters Nuts, assorted varieties: $2.62 each - 64%
4 Barilla Pasta Sauces, assorted varieties: $1.76 each - 55%
1 Lucerne Cheese Queso Fresco - 12 Oz: $2.69 - 18%
4 Dairy Glen Milk 1% - Gallon: $3.19 each - We freeze our milk! - 18%
2 John Mccanns Irish Oatmeal Hot Cereal Ready In 5 Minutes - 24 Oz: $6.69 each - 13%

Say cheese, savings!

Setting Up Your Binder

Having an organized, updated coupon binder is key if you want to fully utilize your coupons. I started off with a small 1"inch binder and used business card inserts for my coupons. I quickly discovered that this wasn't going to work for various reasons especially because of how quickly my binder grew!
Now I have "upgraded" to a zipper type, Mead, Heavy Duty Binder which the only that is missing is a handle. It fits perfectly on the front basket of your shopping cart which only works when I am shopping alone.

Inside there are several zipper pockets for other couponing stuff. For example, I always get 2 copies of the Walgreens Monthly Coupon books (found in the front of the stores) and store them in one of the inside pockets.
I have also purchased baseball card inserts which you can find at Walmart. They are usually located up front by the registers where the collector card stuff is, usually near the cigerattes. They run about $4.00 for about 30 sheets which to start is perfect, but as the weeks go on you will be needing more. These types of inserts fit your coupons perfectly in most cases and even make it easy to store your printed coupons!

I also have pocket dividers to separate the types of coupons into categories. Depending on what you use or what you are keeping coupons for will determine how many you need. I have the following categories:

-Drinks, Pantry, Breakfast, Snacks, Freezer, Meats, Dairy
-Hair, Deodarant, Bodywash, Oral Care, Shaving, Medicine Cabinet, Household Stuff, Baby & Misc

Now, within these categories I have similar stuff together. For example, within snacks I have all chips, cookies, bars, nuts, etc on seperate pages. I also make sure that the coupons are put in so that the Expiration date is easy to see when I am doing my weekly binder cleaning.

I have placed two inserts in the front of my binder before my dividers begin. One insert for all my rewards cards from the various stores I shop plus I place here any rewards I have earned that I can use as cash at these same stores. The second insert is for any coupons which I have received for free goods. I have them in one spot so that I do not forget to claim these goods before they expire.

Every Sunday I purchase about 7-9 papers, depending on what is coming out. I have one delivered to my apartment so I can determine how many I actually want before I hit the store. Before I begin cutting and adding coupons, I go through the binder and take out those that have expired and move stuff around to make room.

This is how I have mine set up. Use this as a starting point to get yours together and see how quickly it can grow. Share pics of your binders!

What to expect

As soon as I became a Stay-At-Home-Mom, our household income obviously took a big hit. We had to find a way to make ends meet with the limited amount of money we had. Then I came across the show Extreme Couponing on TLC and it became clear what I needed to do! I have always been the one to find coupons to save a buck, but never realized how much more I could do to save even more...especially on our groceries. I have been "couponing" for 7 months now and in this short time I have created a small stock pile worth $5,100.00 but only paid $2,400.00 for them. For a beginner that is a good savings rate of 59%.

I decided that in the beginning of 2012 I would take my couponing to a new level and really put more effort in savings. In the first 3 weeks of the year I have purchased $845 in goods but only paid $267 for them, a savings of 66% and climbing! My coupon binder is growing dramatically, the space I do have for my stockpile is quickly filling up and my deep freezer is filled to capacity. Follow me on this blog to see how I do it, pick up tips or just check on my progress! I am making a goal this year to try to save our household the amount I would have been paid in a part time job........Wish me Luck!
